2. Next, decide how you want to divide up the Advent calendar into days. You can do this by creating small slots in the wood (one for each day), or by painting numbers directly on to the wood surface.

The Nativity of Jesus, also known as the birth of Christ, is a holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. The date of the Nativity is not known, and historians place it between late November and early December, in keeping with the date of the Winter Solstice. December 25 was chosen as the date for Christmas because it was already a popular pagan holiday celebrating the winter solstice.
The earliest references to a nativity scene come from 13 t h century France and Italy. The first recorded nativity scene was set up in 1223 by St. Francis of Assisi in Greccio, Italy. Francis had been inspired by a story from the Bible in which Abraham sets up a similar scene to entertain some traveling angels (Genesis 18:1-8).
The popularity of nativity scenes spread throughout Europe, and by the 16 t h century they were being made in Germany as well. Eventually, nativity scenes made their way to America with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania.”Nativity” comes from the Latin word “nativitas” which means “birth.” A traditional nativity scene includes figures representing baby Jesus, Mary his mother, Joseph her husband (sometimes called “the foster father”), shepherds, sheep or other animals,, kings or magi bearing gifts,, and an angel proclaiming “Glory to God in highest heaven!” (Luke 2:14).
