Food away from home: $3,459
In 2019, American consumers spent an average of $3,459 per person on food away from home. This includes both food purchased at restaurants and other food service establishments, as well as takeout and delivery. The vast majority of this spending (75%) went to restaurants, while the remaining 25% was split between takeout/delivery (15%) and other food service establishments such as caterers, school cafeterias, and workplace dining facilities (10%).

When about where we’re spending our money on food away from home though there are some notable differences by generation. Older adults aged 55+ are more likely than any other age group to patronize full-service restaurants while millennials are most likely to turn to quick-service or fast casual eateries. And when it comes to takeout/delivery options millennials are again leading the way with nearly half saying they’ve ordered delivery in the past month compared to just 33% of boomers aged 55+.
Vehicle purchases: $3,975

Not surprisingly, the largest chunk of that spending – $1,452 – went towards going out to the movies. That includes both ticket sales and concessions like popcorn and candy. Home video was the second most popular category with consumers spending $937 on DVDs/Blu-rays and digital rentals/purchases.
Video games came in third place with American’s shelling out $730 on game software and hardware last year. This is likely due in part to the release of several highly anticipated titles like “Batman: Arkham Knight,” “Fallout 4” and “Star Wars Battlefront.” Music rounded out the top four categories with spending totaling $507 in 2016 – this figure includes both physical formats like CDs as well as digital downloads and streaming services.
